The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the club had21 signed free-agent quarterback Blaine Gabbert. The news was first reported on the Pat McAfee Show by Pat McAfee himself. Even with such a talented young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, it’s still important to have depth backing him up. That’s why the Jaguars signed the Ballwin, MO, native before the Draft.

Now the search is over; the Chiefs have found their veteran quarterback to compete for the vacant backup role left by Chad Henne retiring after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win over the Eagles, going against incumbent Shane Buechele and Chris Oladokun. Gabbert has been in this league a long time and has a tremendous feel for the game. His experiences and knowledge will be valuable to our quarterback room, and on top of that, he has the physical tools to step in if needed.

Gabbert fits the bill after serving as Tom Brady’s No. 2 in Tampa Bay since 2020. The 33-year-old Gabbert hasn’t started a game since the 2018 season with the Titans. He’s been a consistent veteran player in this league, and we look forward to what he will bring to our quarterback room.

Gabbert (6-5, 235) has played in 67 games (48 starts) in 11 NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2011-13), San Francisco 49ers (2014-16), Arizona Cardinals (2017), Tennessee Titans (2018) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2020-22). His career numbers include 864 completions on 1,533 attempts (56.4%) for 9,302 yards with 51 touchdowns and 47 interceptions (72.6 rating). He originally entered the NFL as a first-round selection (10th overall) of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Ballwin, Missouri, native played collegiately at Missouri.
