Australia Will Come to a Standstill
The Melbourne Cup is the one time of the year that the whole country stands still. That time is 3 pm, annually on the first Tuesday of every November. When that time comes, the Aussies stop whatever they are doing and tune in to catch the special moment.
Some even take the day off work while others crowd around the nearest accessible TV screen. On the other hand, some workplaces close their usual business early to host Melbourne Cup luncheons.
The Melbourne Cup Parade
In the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup, the City of Melbourne gets into a festive mood by hosting the Melbourne Cup Parade. This year, the parade will kick off on the corner of Swanston and Bourke Streets at noon. The participants will walk down Swanson Street all the way to Federation Square. The parade is free, and tens of thousands come along to catch a glimpse of the trainers, jockeys, and horses that will compete in the Melbourne Cup.
