MLB Draft Profile: Tucker Toman

MLB Draft Profile: Tucker Toman

Tucker Toman has some baseball in his blood. His father, Jim Toman is currently the coach at Middle Tennessee State after coaching Liberty for nine seasons. As expected, Tucker is polished, and his baseball IQ is well ahead of most 18-year-olds. His rankings suggest a late-first to mid-second-round pick. Let’s take a look at what Toman brings to the diamond.

Toman is committed to LSU. He likely won’t see the campus though as his bat is already ahead of many prospects. He is in tune with his swing mechanics from both sides of the plate and can make adjustments when needed. As long as Toman stays within himself, his bat speed and knack for barreling the ball could propel him into the first round in a couple of weeks.

Strengths

Toman has an advanced bat for a prepster. His left-handed stroke is a little better, but he swings well from the right side also. He has good bat-to-ball skills and drives from a balanced lower half. His power will mostly come from the left side as he naturally has more lift than from the right side where his stroke is geared more for line drives. With a few more years to fill out his 6-foot-1 frame, Toman could come into above average power naturally and be a consistent 25-HR threat.

Defensively, there is a question as to where Toman will fit. He has the ability to stick at third base and be good there if he can add a bit of velo to his arm strength and soften his hands. He should be able to do both as his work ethic and baseball IQ are unquestioned.

Weaknesses

Speed isn’t Toman’s strongest suit. His lack of quickness is also a hindrance on the infield and may push him to first base or left field. His bat is his carrying tool, and he will need to cut down on the whiff rates as he moves up. Some scouts worry about his tendency to get pull-happy and swing for the fences. Toman will need to continue to barrel the ball and let his power come naturally as he gets stronger.

Pro Comparison: Bryan Reynolds

The switch-hitting outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates had a season in 2021 that could be the typical Toman season once he finds his stride. Reynolds slashed .302/.390/.522 with 24 home runs. Even the splits between right-handed and left-handed are similar with Reynolds hitting 20 of his 24 homers from the left side while having a better batting average from the right.

Draft Prediction: Milwaukee Brewers, Round 1, Pick 27

The Brewers have no problems drafting bat-first infielders in the first round with Keston Hiura and Tyler Black being a couple of recent ones. Toman fits that mold and should get every chance to prove himself at third base as Black has played mostly second base this season, and Brice Turang is set to stick at shortstop. Toman’s bat could get him into Milwaukee’s lineup in a short time as their offense has been a weak point in the past.
