2022 Bold Predictions: Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t been back to the mountain top since 2019. While they are looking for another shot to at least get back to the big game, this year could be it. However, the division is loaded going forward, and it will not be easy to come out of it. At the same time, people are predicting the Chiefs to make it out of the division barely. With most having the Denver Broncos or Los Angeles Chargers making it out. After making multiple moves this offseason, some big and some small, the Chiefs might have a better roster. With Tyreek Hill getting traded to the Miami Dolphins, most think the offense will be worse without him.

The Offense is Better than Last Year

After the Hill trade, the team did retool the offense and make the receiver core deeper and better overall. However, the offense will no longer rely on home-run plays. Instead, Patrick Mahomes will be focused more on completions and plays 15 yards and in. At the same time, having a freer-flowing offense will make Mahomes more controlled and less reliant on holding the ball while waiting for the big shot. If all of this is correct, then the Chiefs will have no issues having a top offense in the league. At the same time, Mahomes might miss Hill on the deep shot that will pass after a few weeks.

Jerick McKinnon is the Best Running Back

With the news of the Chiefs have re-signed McKinnon, Clyde Edwards-Helaire might be entering his last season in Kanas City. With Edwards-Helaire’s injury history and lack of production, McKinnon might be the primary back for the team. At the same time, many fans are already sick of Edwards-Helaire and his lack of production. McKinnon might be the best stop gap. However, if Edwards-Helaire can put together his best season, he could return to being a fan favorite.

The Defense will be Elite

With the new signings and loaded rookie class, the Chiefs’ defense could be a top unit in the league. While the defense will be young, they all come from high-level colleges, which can help ease them into the league. However, by the end of the season, expect them to put it all together and be brilliant. The team could be scary, with Eric Reid leading the defense from the back end and rookie defensive end George Karlaftis rejuvenating the veteran on the front lines. While the team has seen a lack of production from the defensive line, Karlaftis might be the guy to spark life back into the overpaid players.

The JuJu Smith-Schuster Signing is a Success

While Smith-Schuster has been playing with the dying and decaying statue of Ben Roethlisberger, he now gets the modern-day Brett Favre. Mahomes will resurrect Smith-Schuster’s career and hopefully allow him to sign a big contract next offseason. At the same time, Smith-Schuster could become the top target behind Travis Kelce. However, he does have a lot riding on this season. Coming off a severe injury last year, he has to exceed expectations. He could see his big contract disappear if he has a bad year again. Smith-Schuster only signed a one-year contract with the Chiefs hoping to prove himself. He could regret not taking the three-year contract from the Baltimore Ravens if his gamble fails.
