Alex Binelas is Off to a Hot Start in Greenville

Alex Binelas

The last year has been full of change for Alex Binelas. The Wisconsin native was drafted by Milwaukee in the third-round of the 2021 MLB draft and dealt to Boston a few months later. While he has only been in Boston’s system for a short period of time, Binelas is making an impact. The 22-year-old has gotten off to a hot start in Greenville and has impressed with his offense.

In 12 games this season, he has posted a .306 average with 14 runs batted in. His power has also been on display as eight of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases. While it is only a small sample size, Binelas’ power is not the only statistic that has made him a popular prospect.

Through his first 49 at bats of the season, Binelas has forced 11 walks. The Louisville product has struck out 19 times but posted an OPS of 1.020. In a farm system locked with talent, Binelas has been hard to ignore. While his MLB debut is not projected to come until 2024, his play has been an early bright spot.

Binelas has been just as good defensively. The Red Sox’s 22nd-best prospect has not committed an error and turned four double plays. He has split time between first and third, but excelled regardless of where he is on the diamond. That versatility will be critical, with Triston Casas expected to be the first baseman of the future.

Why Binelas is a Prospect to Keep an Eye on

Although the season is less than a month old, Binelas has been a force in the Greenville lineup. If he can continue his recent play, the former 86th overall pick could find himself in Double-A. He has been able to hit the ball for power to all fields and has shown solid plate discipline. The key for him will be to avoid prolonged slumps when his timing gets off track.

As the season continues, the 21-year-old will be a name for Red Sox fans to keep an eye on. His power makes him an exciting prospect, and he has shown the ability to hit for average. That is a promising sign for the Boston as their farm system continues to be one of the best in baseball.
