One week into the playoffs will have fans doing their research on all the teams and rosters. They’re daydreaming and looking at future opponents in a “what if my squad makes it all the way to the Finals” type of scenario. As they are doing this, they’ll probably realize that some players out there have the same last name. Are they members of the same family? “Yes” would be the unsurprising answer.
If the basketball gods want to have fun, they could easily do everything in their power to make sure that at least one NBA player will be going head-to-head against a family member. There are at least five scenarios in this year’s NBA playoffs where families won’t know who to root for because their brother, father, or son will be going against a member of the same clan.

Hernangomez vs. Hernangomez
Juancho Hernangomez joined the Utah Jazz less than three months ago while his older brother Willy Hernangomez has been with the New Orleans Pelicans for two seasons. They could face each other in the second round of the playoffs but this scenario could be an impossibility. Willy and Juancho have to survive a first-round seven-game series before the Hernangomez family can even start talking about a reunion.
Curry vs. Curry
Another Stephen Curry and Seth Curry shootout might happen if the Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets make it to the Finals. This is going to be fun for the fans but not so much for the Curry family. Last time they had to compete for the same prize was at the three-point shooting contest during All-Star Weekend a few years ago. The family decided back then that they would be rooting for Seth because Stephen has all the awards already. Maybe the same agreement could take place again.
Holiday vs. Holiday
Are the Phoenix Suns having a rematch with the Milwaukee Bucks this year? If these two squads meet again in the Finals, there’ll be a sibling rivalry involved. The Suns got Aaron Holiday a few months ago and everyone knows his brother, Jrue Holiday, plays for Milwaukee. Jrue just won a ring last year so maybe the Holiday family will be rooting for Aaron this time. If the Suns win, that means all three Holiday brothers get a ring. Justin Holiday, another Holiday brother, already won a title when he played for the Warriors.
Rivers vs. Rivers
Coach Doc Rivers could meet his son, Austin Rivers, in the NBA Finals. That meeting would only be possible if the Philadelphia 76ers of Doc and the Denver Nuggets of Austin somehow beat all of their Conference opponents. Things will certainly heat up in this Rivers versus Rivers matchup. Future family dinners will never be the same again unless they all agree to stop talking about basketball in the dining area.
Curry vs. Rivers
If the Nets reach the Finals and face the Nuggets, Callie Rivers Curry will have some hard thinking to do. Callie is the wife of Nets guard Seth and is the sister of Nuggets guard Austin. This is where the dilemma comes in. If you’re Callie, do you root for your husband? Or brother? No one in the world wants to be in a situation like this. Luckily for Callie, she won’t have to choose between her husband or brother because the Nuggets are on the verge of being eliminated from the NBA playoffs.
