Over the past week, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) has felt the sting of harsh media commentary concerning their FIFA Women’s World Cup debut victory over Thailand where they scored 13 goals, the most goals in a World Cup game in history. Some media personnel called the United States’ large margin victory and controversial, goal-accompanying celebrations as “disrespectful” “unnecessary” and “overkill”. The USWNT team tried to score as many goals as possible in order to create a cushion in goal differential for the days and games ahead.
As for the celebrations, it is important to keep in mind that players Lindsey Horan, Sam Mewis, and Mallory Pugh made their World Cup debuts during this match where they all scored their first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup goals. These players contributed four goals collectively to the United States’ thirteen total goals scored in the match. So the question is, who wouldn’t want to celebrate their young teammates who have just made the biggest accomplishments of their careers to date?
Not long after this slanderous commentary began, Head Coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian of (Thailand) made a statement on FIFA TV about The United States’ conduct on the field. “Our players have much more motivation now. In particular, several USA Players have tweeted to encourage our players. Thank you to Team USA for being so professional.” Thailand went on to score a goal in their second group play match against Sweden but ultimately suffered a 5-1 defeat.
After defeating Thailand, the United States went on to win their second group play match against Chile scoring three goals to Chile’s one and clinching a spot in the knockout stage of the Women’s World Cup. The USWNT play again this Thursday, June 20th against Sweden at 3 pm Eastern Time on FOX and Telemundo.
