Will Kenny Young Make the Most out of his Opportunity in 2021?

The Los Angeles Rams traded Marcus Peters to the Baltimore Ravens for Kenny Young and a fifth-round pick in 2019. Peters has found success with his new squad, while Young has not. In 2019, he was a First-Team All-Pro and signed a three-year, $42 million dollar extension shortly after. That year, Peters picked off three passes and posted a PFF grade of 83.2.

Young has seen other players with connections to him find success as well. Krys Barnes, Young’s teammate at UCLA who was an undrafted free agent in 2020, has found value on the Green Bay Packers. Barnes racked up 80 tackles during his rookie season which was the eighth-best among rookies. UCLA has produced other successful linebackers in recent years as well. Some names include Myles Jack (2016) and Eric Kendricks (2015).

Young has not been able to create similar success to some of his former UCLA teammates. He showed promise in his first two seasons posting PFF grades of 55.1 and 53.8 in 2018 and 2019 respectively, but things took a turn for the worst in 2020. Young posted an abysmal PFF grade of 41.6 and the future for the once-promising linebacker is not looking bright.

One of the reasons the Rams added Young is because he is a good athlete with tremendous speed. His ability to blitz the quarterback and make electric plays is outstanding.

However, Young has not been able to replicate his success much in Los Angeles. He only has one sack to his name in 1.5 seasons with the team. Although Young has had his ups and downs, he will have another chance in 2021. He is currently listed as one of the starting inside linebackers for the Rams and with a new defensive coordinator, Young has a major opportunity to lengthen his NFL career. The Rams kick off their season against the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football where Young will have the chance to make a mark and prove himself to the fans.
