Kevin Plawecki has had a Memorable Run in Boston

Plawecki

When the Red Sox signed Kevin Plawecki before the 2020 season, he was not known for his offense. Over the past two years, however, that has not been the case. Through 63 games with Boston, he has been an on-base machine. While the Red Sox have struggled of late, Plawecki has been a bright spot. As the 2021 season winds down, the Red Sox will need the Purdue product to continue his current production.

In 39 games this season, Plawecki has posted a .313 average. He has provided a spark off the bench and gotten better in the second half. After batting .444 in July, he has been just as good in August and already has six hits. In his first full season with Boston, he has shown that his performance in 2020 was no fluke and continued to have a career renaissance.

Prior to arriving In Boston, Plawecki had never hit above .260 in a season. He was known for his defense and was a career .218 hitter. While some of his defense took a step back in last year, he was valuable due to his bat. In 2020 it has been the same story, but Plawecki has only committed one error. In 200.1 innings of work, he has a .955 fielding percentage.

While Plawecki has played solid defense, his average has been on the rise over the past two months. Since the beginning of July, his average has risen from .250 to .313. He has three extra-base hits in that span, which matches his total from the first two months of the season. While the rest of the Red Sox offense went cold, Plawecki has continued to hit and had three RBI’s on Sunday afternoon.

What to expect from Kevin Plawecki for the rest of 2021

With free agency on the horizon, Plawecki is having one of the best seasons in his career. He has only struck out 16 times this year and has seven extra-base hits. Over the past, two years the veteran catcher has posted a .326 average while backing up Christian Vazquez. Regardless of where he is in 2022, he has had an impressive run with the Red Sox and surpassed expectations.
