The Washington Nationals have continued their firesale. On Thursday evening, Washington traded outfielder Kyle Schwarber to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher Aldo Ramirez.

Schwarber has had a fantastic year in the nation’s capital, making his first-ever All-Star team. His slash line for the year is an impressive .253/.340/.570. The .570 slugging percentage is a career-best, as is his .910 OPS. He is under contract through 2021 with a mutual option in 2022, which would see him make $11 million.

Ramirez ranked as the 19th-best prospect in the Red Sox’ system, according to MLB Pipeline. He is currently pitching at A with a 2.03 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched.
For the Red Sox, they acquire another huge bat for their lineup as they prepare for the postseason and keep their lead in the AL East. With Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez already on the roster and both having over 20 home runs this season, Schwarber will join a group that loves home runs. For the Nationals, they get some good value back via a top-20 prospect in exchange for a player who was essentially just a rental.
It will be interesting to see where Schwarber ends up playing for the Red Sox, who are all set in the outfield but desperately need help at first base.
