Yankees Trade Luis Cessa, Justin Wilson to Reds

As midnight set in, the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds struck a deal. Following the Yankees’ 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, Brian Cashman shipped two relievers to the Reds. The two hurlers on the move are righty Luis Cessa and lefty Justin Wilson. Cincinnati will send a player to be named later back to New York.

This certainly helps the Reds, who beat the Cubs by a score of 7-4 on Tuesday and are in pursuit of the Milwaukee Brewers atop the NL Central.

As for the Yankees, they did acquire Clay Holmes from the Pittsburgh Pirates a couple of days ago. Still, their bullpen has struggled, making this move a little suspect. The range of explanations surrounding this deal varies. The Yankees could be waving the white flag, creating space under the luxury tax threshold, or preparing for an even bigger addition; that remains to be seen.

Cessa, 29, has a 2.82 ERA in 29 games for the Yankees this season. He has also compiled 31 strikeouts and 17 walks over 38.1 innings. He brings some much-needed length to the Reds’ bullpen and will presumably obtain a high leverage role.

Wilson, 33, was in his second rodeo with the Yankees and third in the state of New York. He has struggled amidst an injury-filled 2021 campaign. Through 18 innings, Wilson ownsTue a 7.50 ERA with 15 strikeouts and 1.50 WHIP. He will join the lefties in the Reds’ bullpen.

To make room on their roster, the Reds designated righties Ashton Goudeau and Edgar Garcia for assignment.
