The New York Mets have been decimated by injury in this month of May and they don’t seem to stop. There are many possibilities to attribute the injuries too but the reality is that the Mets have looked much more like the Syracuse Mets over the last few days. This was done while keeping a 1.5 game lead in the National League East.
Among the Mets down include Jacob deGrom, Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, Pete Alonso, Kevin Pillar, Taijuan Walker, and several others. To replace these injured Mets, Syracuse has sent up Khalil Lee, Johneshwy Fargas, Brandon Drury, Jake Hager (later DFA’d) Jordan Yamamoto, and several others. The current Mets roster has sustained fairly well considering the circumstances but will not likely last long. In order to compete at a first-place level, the Mets would be wise to look at the free agent market and the trade market to fill holes. They already did so by trading for Cameron Maybin from the Chicago Cubs for $1. Here are some names to look into and what the cost might be.
Sign Jeremy Jeffress
The former star closer clearly has plenty left in the tank as shown in 2019 and 2020. Still pumping high-90’s fastballs, Jeffress would immediately add to the Mets banged-up pitching staff.
Trade for Kris Bryant
The start third-baseman was rumored in the offseason to be a trade target of New York. The Mets already had acquired their star this offseason in Francisco Lindor who has not been exceptional to date. Bryant is putting up MVP caliber numbers with a .307 average, 10 home runs, and 28 RBI’s. This would cost the Mets a few prospects but would be well worth it as the Mets division is wide open.
Trade for Max Kepler
The Minnesota Twins have not been at all what they thought they would be this season. The Twins have been decimated by injury and a poor pitching staff. The one thing they have not been missing is outfield talent. The Twins’ top two prospects are both outfielders who have made impacts at the major league level this season. The Twins’ future will likely be without Max and his value is high now. Despite the Mets being down many outfielders that may come back soon, depth isn’t a bad option and Kepler may not cost that much.
The Mets have many options cut out besides the ones mentioned above. This can also include some aggressive prospect promotions like Tylor Megill in Double-A, Thomas Szapucki in Triple-A, Quinn Brodey in Triple-A among many others.
