Kobe Bryant Should Not Become the NBA Logo

Kobe NBA Logo

Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving wants the National Basketball Association to make the late Kobe Bryant the league’s new logo, but it could be disrespectful to several others.

Irving is one of the NBA’s most thoughtful players, and took to Instagram recently to suggest that Bryant should replace Jerry West as the new NBA logo.

Irving, who was a close friend of Bryant, posted the plea this week. However, it should not happen for a variety of reasons.

Jerry’s pick

You might think it would be disrespectful to West, who has been the logo for the last five decades. Even he advocated for a change in 2015… it just wasn’t in favor of Bryant.

“I hate to say it’s not a Laker, but Michael Jordan [should be the logo],” West told the Huffington Post when he was asked who should be his replacement. “He’s been the greatest player I’ve ever seen. And I’m probably a harsh judge of talent in the sense that I admire players that are really good defensive players and really good offensive players. And I felt at his time in the game, he was the best defensive player in the game, but more importantly, he was the best offensive player. And he made his teams win.”

It would make logical sense to have the current logo silhouette have a pretty large say in who his potential replacement will be.

Who would Kobe pick?

It’s important to imagine if Bryant would think he is the right choice to replace West on the NBA logo. He would say that Jordan deserves to be the logo over him. The ‘Black Mamba’ even mentioned during “The Last Dance” documentary that everything he did was due to the influence that Jordan had on him.

“I had a question about shooting his turnaround shot so I asked him about it, and he gave me a great detailed answer, but on top of that, he said, if you ever need anything, give me a call. Like my big brother,” Bryant said during the ten-part documentary that aired on ESPN last summer. “I truly hate having discussions about who would win one-on-one, and your fans saying, ‘Hey Kobe, you’d beat Michael one-on-one.’ I feel like, ‘Yo, what you get from me is from him.’ I don’t get five championships here (with the Lakers) without him because he guided me so much and gave me so much great advice.”

If what Kobe accomplished had a lot to do with how Jordan played, then it only makes sense for Jordan to be the logo over Bryant. And what would Jordan think if he saw Bryant as the new logo when everyone in the world knows that Jordan was the better player? He would not likely be pleased.

To be clear, Bryant is deserving enough to represent the league, but he just does not deserve it more than Jordan.
