Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those questions for the Denver Broncos.
How will the Running Back by Committee Play Out?
Former Los Angeles Chargers’ running back Melvin Gordon‘s first season in Denver finished with him totaling 986 yards rushing and nine touchdowns. Phillip Lindsay added 500 yards on the ground in just 11 games after dealing with an injury. The team playing from behind almost weekly limiting the Broncos ground game.
Does Drew Lock have Enough Weapons in his Arsenal?
In 13 games under center, Lock passed for just under 3,000 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also recorded 15 interceptions. His 2020 showing has many second-guessing if he is the answer at quarterback. Especially for a franchise, who under team president John Elway, has struggled to find consistency at the position. The team used their first pair of draft picks on wide receivers, Jerry Jeudy from Alabama in the first round and KJ Hamler from Penn State in the second. However, the duo combined for just over 1,100 yards and six touchdowns.
The Defense Added Who?
Perennial Pro Bowler Von Miller missed the entire season with a dislocated peroneal tendon in his ankle. A.J. Bouye only played in just seven games after battling a shoulder injury, concussion, and six-game suspension, which he still has a game left to serve at the start of next year. The team has since released Bouye. The Broncos acquired Jurrell Casey from the Titans for next to nothing, just a seventh-round pick. But the five-time Pro Bowl selection only started three games before suffering a bicep tear and missing the remainder of the season. All indications are Casey, like Bouye, is one and done in Denver.
