Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those questions for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
What can be expected from Minshew in his second season?
Season two from Gardner Minshew saw him miss games due to injury and others after being benched. With the team finishing with the worst record in the NFL, they are officially on the clock for the draft. With the likelihood that they are going to draft Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, Minshew’s days as the starting quarterback in Duval County are likely over.
How will they look defensively after an overhaul?
For a team that lost 15 of its 16 games, the defense wasn’t terrible. It kept them in quite a few close games. With most of the household names (Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, and A.J. Bouye) that used to play on this unit now calling other cities home, the unfamiliar names provided glimpses of hopes going forward. New head coach Urban Meyer has some decent talent to evaluate between now and the draft. He will be able to use his draft capital elsewhere.
Will Fournette earn a new contract?
Obviously not with Jacksonville. Leonard Fournette, like many from his draft class, had his fifth-year option declined by the Jaguars. After being released by the team prior to the start of the season, Fournette signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. As the season wore on his role and touches increased. He will be playing in his first Super Bowl as a result. Meanwhile, his replacement in Jacksonville, undrafted rookie James Robinson, rushed for over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie campaign. Safe to say starting running back is one position that does not need addressing prior to next season.
The good thing for the Jacksonville Jaguars is that as bad as things were in 2020, they can only go up in 2021.
