The Toronto Blue Jays have an agreement to sign George Springer in a huge acquisition for a young team trying to knock off the New York Yankees.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reported on Tuesday night that the Toronto Blue Jays “continue to be aggressive” in their talks with Springer, the best outfielder on the market this offseason. They were aggressive enough, as news came Tuesday night that the Jays had come to an agreement with the outfielder.

The New York Mets were seen as the Blue Jays’ main competition, as both were in need of a bona fide center fielder. The Mets are closer in proximity to Connecticut, the place where Springer grew up and went to college. However, it looks like they were not as interested in Springer after acquiring Francisco Lindor‘s contract in his final year before he hits free agency.

Springer is a top-three center fielder in baseball behind Mike Trout and Cody Bellinger, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to slow down his production at the plate.

In his last full season (2019), the 31-year-old hit a career-high 39 home runs and drove in 96 runs. He made his third consecutive All-Star appearance and won his second Silver Slugger award in three years.

Baseball Reference projects him to finish the 2021 season with 29 home runs and an .847 OPS in 555 plate appearances.
