The Cleveland Indians have agreed to send All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor and long-time starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to the New York Mets. In return, the Mets will be sending 22-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Andres Gimenez along with a couple of prospects featuring outfielder Isaiah Green, right-hander Ryan Wolf, and starting shortstop Amed Rosario.
Lindor is a four-time All-Star with two Silver Slugger and two Gold Glove awards. The 27-year-old finished the 2020 season batting .258/.335/.415, a career-low in all three categories. In Lindor’s first full season in the majors in 2016, he helped Cleveland reach the World Series, where they ultimately fell to the Chicago Cubs in seven games.
It has been widely reported for years now that Cleveland would move on from Lindor because they are “strapped for cash.” A player like Lindor will certainly request top dollar when he hits the open market next winter.
Carrasco is a Comeback Player of the Year who became a fan-favorite in Cleveland after battling leukemia. The talented hurler is 88-73 all-time with a 3.77 ERA and over 1,300 strikeouts. He’ll join the likes of Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, and Marcus Stroman in a dominant starting rotation.
The two minor-league prospects heading back to Cleveland were both ranked on MLB Pipeline’s list of the top-30 Mets prospects. Wolf checks in at No. 9 while Greene occupies the No. 10 slot. In addition to Wolf and Greene, Gimenez is an exciting player, too. The young shortstop was once a top-ranked Mets prospect himself.
Under new ownership, the Mets were favorites to go after big names such as Lindor. Steve Cohen has not been shy in his quest to assemble young talent around the Mets’ already-young core. With Lindor and an incredible core in tow, Mets fans should be in for a treat in 2021.
