Washington Capitals goalie Henrik Lundqvist announced on Thursday that he won’t be able to play during the upcoming season because of a heart condition.
Lundqvist had been undergoing tests on his heart for several weeks.
“It’s still very hard for me to process all of this,” Lundqvist said in a video posted on Twitter by the Capitals. “And kind of shocking, to be honest. After lots of discussions with doctors around the country, and finally receiving the last results earlier this week, I, unfortunately, won’t be able to join the team this year.”
The goalie also shared the news on his Twitter.

Lundqvist signed a one-year deal with the Capitals this offseason after becoming an unrestricted free agent after 15 years with the New York Rangers. He was 10-12-3 with a 3.16 GAA(goals-against average), a .905 save percentage, and had one shutout last season. In 15 seasons with the Rangers, he was 459-310-96 with a 2.43 GAA, a .918 save percentage, and 64 shutouts. In 2011-12 he won the Vezina Trophy for being the top goalie in the NHL. Lundqvist led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014 but still hasn’t won a championship.
With Lundqvist out, the Capitals will turn to Ilya Samsonov, Braden Holtby, Vitek Vanecek, and Phoenix Copley to be their goalies. Hopefully, Lundqvist will play next year.
