While there were some college football games, there was also some college hoops action on Saturday, so we’ll recap it, including a big upset, and get you set for today’s slate of action including two ranked games.
Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!
Yesterday’s Biggest Games
Florida 71 vs. #20 Florida State 83
The big story in this game was Florida’s Keyontae Johnson collapsing on the court in the first half. He was taken off the court on a stretcher and immediately was driven to a Tallahassee hospital. Players were understandably in tears on the court. Johnson scored five points before the unfortunate incident.
The Gators’ star “is in critical but stable condition” at the hospital. Coach Mike White will remain with Johnson while the team will go back home. The team said in a release on Saturday that Johnson stayed overnight at the hospital.
While this game is irrelevant due to what happened to Johnson, M.J. Walker and Scottie Barnes combined for 38 points for the Seminoles in their 12-point win.
Upset Alert: #6 Illinois 78 vs. Missouri 81
Illinois proved that they were the real deal this past week with their win over #10 Duke, but fell back to earth somehow in what was supposed to be an easy game. Ayo Dosunmu was great once again, as he dropped 36 points, but their defense just wasn’t up to par.
Tigers; guards Xavier Pinson and Dru Smith led their team in scoring with 17 and 18 points respectively while Javon Pickett scored 14 points in what will be their best win of the season.
It will be interesting to see where the AP voters rank the Fighting Illini after they had a roller-coaster week, beating Coach Mike Krzyzewski and company, then falling to an unranked opponent.
Notre Dame 64 vs. Kentucky 63
Kentucky was down 33-9 in the first half to a mediocre Notre Dame team, but their defense stepped up big in the second half to cut the deficit down to one point with about 41 seconds remaining.
Notre Dame had a shot clock violation after an air-ball, which gave the Wildcats the ball back with 11.4 seconds on the clock. Olivier Sarr had the last shot, but couldn’t get it to go, allowing the Fighting Irish to escape Rupp Arena with a one-point victory after nearly losing a 24-point lead.
Kentucky drops to 1-4 for the first time since the 1984-85 season and their schedule doesn’t get any easier, as they will play formerly ranked UCLA and #25 Louisville in their next two games.
Oregon 74 vs. Washington 71
The Ducks walked off the court with a win and a big reason why was because it was truly a team win. Four players scored at least 12 points, including Chris Duarte and Eugene Omoruyi, who both scored 14 points.
Huskies guard Quade Green certainly wasn’t the reason why Washington lost yesterday. He scored 26 points and had four assists, in which he led the team in both categories on Saturday.
The Ducks are scheduled to host UCLA on December 23rd while Washington plays Montana on Wednesday.
Games to Watch Today
#19 Richmond vs. #11 West Virginia
How to Watch: Sunday, December 13, 1:00 PM ET, ESPN
This will be a great game to watch on Sunday while you pay attention to some NFL games. Richmond upset Kentucky a couple of Sundays ago and hopes to stun another ranked team today.
POSTPONED: #13 Texas vs. #2 Baylor
Was scheduled for Sunday, December 13, 3:00 PM ET, ESPN
Baylor has suspended all basketball activities due to COVID-19 issues, per a team release so their next two games including today’s matchup against Texas have been postponed. This would have been the Bears’ first conference game of the season.
St. John’s vs. Georgetown
How to Watch: Sunday, December 13, 7:30 PM ET, FS1
Both teams dropped their last games in their conference openers, so they’ll be looking to improve to 1-1 in Big East play. Julian Champagnie has made an impact for the Johnnies since he made his season debut after missing the first couple of games. The Brooklyn native is averaging 22 points, seven rebounds, and two assists this year.
