The NCAA Basketball Daily Dunk: Wednesday, December 9, 2020

The NCAA Basketball Daily Dunk

Duke, North Carolina, and Kansas were all in action on Tuesday night, so we’ll recap their games and preview another group of ranked teams in action on Wednesday.

Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!

Yesterday’s Biggest Games

#8 Creighton 72 vs. #5 Kansas 73

Creighton has quietly gotten into the top-10 and they held their own at Kansas on Tuesday, trailing by just four points at halftime. The game was tied at 70 with less than a minute to go when Jalen Wilson sunk a three-pointer to make Creighton start fouling. Kansas missed the two free throws and then Wilson fouled Marcus Zegarowski behind the arc so he got three free throws. Zegarowski made the first two but missed the final shot to give the Jayhawks a 73-72 win.

Not only did Wilson make the game-winning three-pointer, but he finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs.

#16 North Carolina 80 vs. #3 Iowa 93

Luka Garza has been the talk of college basketball early on this year so all eyes were on him in primetime against a “blue blood” program in North Carolina. The Tar Heels did a good job defending against him, as Garza only scored six points in the first half (2-for-9 from the field). He finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

The story for the Hawkeyes was their success from behind the arc, as it turned into a three-point contest. Iowa made 10 triples in the first half and ended with 17 of them, accounting for 51 of their 93 points.

#6 Illinois 83 vs #10 Duke 68

The nightcap was between two top-10 teams at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke was favored by 3.5 points before the game according to several sportsbooks, and Illinois threw that number right out the window.

It was a rough start for the Blue Devils, as they were down 13 points in the middle of the first half. They never really got back into the game and were trailing by double digits with a minute left. Duke fell to 2-2 with their second consecutive loss against a top-10 opponent.

Ayo Dosunmu led the Fighting Illini in scoring with 18 points and 12 defensive rebounds. Illinois’ win last night proved that they are for real and should be one of the favorites along with Michigan State and Iowa to win the Big Ten this season.
