Report: Royals Sign Carlos Santana

Royals sign Carlos Santana

As the MLB Hot Stove starts heating up with the Winter Meetings underway, The Kansas City Royals sign Carlos Santana to a two-year deal worth $17.5 million per Jon Heyman.

Santana, who is familiar with the American League Central, has spent 10 of his 11 big league seasons with the Cleveland Indians. Earlier in the offseason Royals’ owner, Dayton Moore spoke about a need to bring in high on-base guys. Santana fits the mold. He led the league in walks this season with 47.

The former Indians’ first baseman/designated hitter has a career .248/.366/.446 slash with 240 career home runs. He is also very durable, missing more than 10 games only once since 2010. Santana loves hitting at Kauffman Stadium. In Kansas City, he slashes .327/.449/.628 with 18 bombs in only 74 games.

The move likely pushes Hunter Dozier to third base full time, where he played 100 games in 2019.

The signing pushes the rebuild along a little faster. It also gives the Royals a solid bat to flip either next season or the year after for more prospects.

Overall, it is a great move by the Royals. They get their OBP guy and takes him away from their division opponent. Santana has always been a solid contributor and someone who is consistent. Kansas City knows what they are getting in the 34-year-old switch-hitter.
