Quick Reactions
Kentucky is gone
Yes, you saw it right. John Calipari‘s team is nowhere to be seen on the top-25. They are off to their worst start (1-3) since the 2000-2001 season. They have a very young team like they always do, but they aren’t playing fundamentally sound basketball. The turnovers are out of control–they had 13 turnovers in the first half on Sunday–and until they fix that, they won’t get back into the top-25.
Status of Gonzaga
Gonzaga is the top-ranked team in the country right now but they might not be next Monday because they have paused all activities until December 14 due to positive tests inside their program.
Before the next rankings, Baylor plays Nicholls State and #13 Texas this week so a win against a ranked opponent should get them to the #1 spot over a team who isn’t even practicing right now.
Finally respecting SDSU
I said it last week. The San Diego State Aztecs deserved to be in the top-25 after beating #22 UCLA by 15 points to start the year despite losing Mountain West Player of the Year, Malachi Flynn, and two other starters in Yanni Wetzell and KJ Feagin.
They remain unbeaten after a comeback win over Pepperdine and should be higher if they can get a win over #23 Arizona State.
Texas is rising quickly
The Longhorns are here to stay. Yes, they lost to Villanova this past week but Villanova was a top-four team to start the year and they were able to beat North Carolina in the game before.
Texas faces Baylor on Sunday and after that, there isn’t a loss on their schedule until Kansas on New Year’s Day.
