Breaking: Dodgers Acquire Knebel From Brewers

Breaking: Dodgers Acquire Knebel From Brewers

Just over an hour after the 8 p.m. EST non-tender deadline, it was announced that the Los Angeles Dodgers had acquired right-hander Corey Knebel from the Milwaukee Brewers for a player to be named later or cash. Knebel was reportedly set to be non-tendered, but the Brewers instead found a trade for him. He will still be eligible for arbitration with Los Angeles.

Knebel, 29, came back from Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2019 and struggled this past season. He held a 6.08 ERA with a 15-to-8 K/BB rate over 13.1 innings in relief. Knebel earned $5.125 million, and because of his 2020 struggles won’t get much of a raise on that. The Dodgers are never afraid to buy low on formerly great relievers.

The righty was at the top of his game from 2017-18 when he had 55 saves, a 2.54 ERA, and 2.74 FIP in 131.1 innings. He also struck out batters at a 14.7 K/9 rate and had a 40.2% strikeout percentage. He would be a solid addition to the Dodgers’ bullpen if he can get back to pre-Tommy John form.
