Week 11 Preview: New York Jets vs. Los Angeles Chargers

The 2020 New York Jets are one of the worst teams in football history. They’re on track to finish 0-16 in a competitive AFC East division with a stingy rest-of-season schedule. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers have looked impressive with Justin Herbert at quarterback, but the rookie still has just one win. The two squads will meet on Sunday in Los Angeles with nothing more than draft implications on the line.

The Chargers have won their past three matchups against the Jets, dating back to their time in San Diego. They also lead the all-time series, 22-12-1. However, Adam Gase has fared better against the Chargers than Anthony Lynn has against the Jets. In two head coaching appearances against the Bolts, Gase is 2-0. Lynn, meanwhile, is split at 1-1.

The big story for the Jets this season is Gase himself, along with the direction of the franchise. Gase has been somewhat of a disaster for the Jets ever since his infamous introductory press conference. New York did finish 7-9 in 2019, but Gase still made questionable coaching decisions. Armed with added defensive aid (minus Jamal Adams) and a stronger offensive line in 2020, Gase’s Jets have yet to win. His reported toxicity with some players has led to the release of Le’Veon Bell, while other players have also shown their frustration.

Nevertheless, Gase remains the head coach of the Jets. At this point, it is unlikely he gets let go until the end of the season, but some fans continue to fear that the former Dolphins coach will return to the team in 2021. After all, the Jets have been relying on backup Joe Flacco, an injured receiving core, the lack of Jamal Adams, and other significant hindrances. Gase also led the team to a 7-9 record in 2019.

On the other side of the field, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn’s name has also come up as a potential candidate to be fired. Despite a sensational year from Justin Herbert, the Chargers are just 2-7. One of the few factors in Lynn’s favor are the injuries to Austin Ekeler and Derwin James, but it’s unclear if these will be enough to save his job.

With Ekeler out, Herbert has been relying on players like Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Jalen Guyton through the air. The backfield has been murky, but Kalen Ballage has taken on the lead role until Ekeler returns. The Chargers also have Joshua Kelley and Troymaine Pope on their depth chart. Justin Jackson is on injured reserve.

Point Spread: LAC -10 (-110) | NYJ +10 (-110)
Moneyline: LAC -500 | NYJ (+350)
Over/Under: O 47.5 (-110) | U 47.5 (-110)

A spread of 10 in a game in which the Jets are playing might be enticing, but New York should keep it close. One-third of the Jets’ losses have been within 10 points, and that trend should continue on Sunday as they face off against an underwhelming Chargers team. If you’re betting on the spread, take the Jets, but you might want to avoid this one. As for the total points, hammer the under. 47.5 is way too high for these two teams.

Prediction

Justin Herbert is still searching for his second career win but should get it on Sunday against the Jets. With Joe Flacco under center, Gang Green will rely on Breshad Perriman and La’Mical Perine offensively while accepting the fact that Los Angeles’ offense will rip apart their defense. This should finish as a two-score game; no more, no less.

Final Score: Chargers 27, Jets 17
