The Oklahoma City Thunder have traded veteran point guard Chris Paul to the Phoenix Suns, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The Suns were rumored to be showing interest in Paul in recent weeks. Today, the first day trades could be made in the 2020 offseason, the Suns pulled the trigger. Paul will join Devin Booker (24 years old) and Deandre Ayton (22) in Phoenix. Paul is 35 years old and will be playing his 16th NBA season next year.

A future Hall of Famer, Paul bounced back in the 2019-20 season with a Thunder team that surprised people. He averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 assists, and five rebounds per contest last season. He still has gas left in the tank and certainly has a lot he can teach players like Booker and Ayton.

The Suns are sending the Thunder Kelly Oubre Jr., Ricky Rubio, Ty Jerome, and Jalen Lecque. Additionally, the Suns are sending a future first-round pick to OKC. According to Charania, that pick is protected 1-12 in 2022, 1-10 in 2023, and 1-8 in 2024. If it hasn’t conveyed by then, it will be an unprotected 2025 first-rounder. It’s worth noting that the Thunder are also sending Abdel Nader to the Suns to complete the deal, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Thunder have also already agreed to trade Dennis Schroder to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Thunder continue their rebuild, hoarding assets for years to come. The Suns, meanwhile, are bringing in an all-time great late in his career.
