The New York Jets had little hope going into this week to grab their first win finally. That sliver of hope was lost by halftime against the Kansas City Chiefs as the reigning Super Bowl champions handled the Jets with ease in this one. The Chiefs cruised to their seventh win of the season.
The Jets made a valiant effort in the first half to try and keep this game within reach. However, after New York’s offense imploded in the second half, the Chiefs ran away to a 35-9 victory. The Jets had a handful of solid drives through the first two quarters, including two drives of more than 50 yards. However, when you’re playing the Chiefs, you can’t settle for field goals and expect to win.
Sam Darnold and the Jets offense stalled out on all four of their first-half drives settling for three field goals and getting the fourth attempt blocked to end the half. Darnold threw for 133 scoreless yards and completed 60 percent of his passes. Rookie Denzel Mims led the team in receiving yards with 42, while Braxton Berrios led in receptions and targets. The Jets were unable to amount any points or offense in the second half totaling just 63 yards.
For the Chiefs, this game went exactly as you expected, and Patrick Mahomes reminded everyone that he is, in fact, an MVP contender. Mahomes threw for 416 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions, and completed 73.8 percent of his passes. Travis Kelce led the team in almost all receiving categories with 12 targets, eight receptions, one touchdown, and 109 yards. Meanwhile, wideout Tyreek Hill led the team in receiving touchdowns with two but also had 98 receiving yards. Second-year wideout Mecole Hardman also totaled over 90 receiving yards and grabbed a touchdown pass. The Chiefs didn’t allow the Jets to force any turnovers on them, which was the Jets’ only hope in this one.
Defensively, the Jets fell flat while the Chiefs stood firm in the second half. The Jets were unable to force any turnovers, and obviously, the secondary struggled in this one. Avery Williamson led the team in tackles with nine. At the same time, second-year veteran Quinnen Williams made a couple of big plays early. For the Chiefs, the “bend don’t break” mentality worked in the first half, and they shut down Darnold and the Jets in the second. Daniel Sorensen led the team in tackles with nine, Chris Jones got pressure on Darnold all game, and Tershawn Wharton grabbed the Chiefs only sack.

For the Jets, things continue to look bad, moving forward. The defense was futile to the high-powered offense of the Chiefs, and the Jets offense fell apart in the second half. Part of this may be because Darnold might have been injured late in the fourth quarter after taking a hard shot on a scramble. Nonetheless, the Jets remain winless and will have to resurrect their offense against the New England Patriots next week.
For the Chiefs, however, things look great. Kansas City dominated in this one, and they did it spectacularly by letting Mahomes cook. Healthwise, the only notable injury was Hardman late in the game. But he could walk off the field under his own power. The Chiefs move on to another “should-win” game next week against the Carolina Panthers.
