Houston we have a new coach. The Houston Rockets are hiring Dallas Mavericks assistant Stephen Silas to be their next head coach.

The Rockets and Silas are finalizing a contract. A formal announcement is expected to be made soon, sources told ESPN’s, Adrian Wojnarowski.

Silas replaces Mike D’Antoni whose contract expired at the end of the season.  He was an assistant coach for the Mavericks in the last two seasons. Before joining the Mavericks he was an assistant coach with the Charlotte Hornets for nine seasons. Silas has coached Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, and Kamba Walker. He will now get to coach James Harden and Russell Westbrook.

The Rockets would like to have John Lucas return to their coaching staff. Lucas was a finalist for the head coach job and has been the director of player development. However, he could have a bigger role under Silas. This is Silas’s first head coaching job. He helped the Mavericks make the playoffs twice in three years. We’ll see if he can lead the Rockets to the playoffs and maybe a championship.
