Fantasy Football Winners and Losers: Week 5

Week 5 of the 2020 NFL season is in the books. For the majority of the league, Tuesday morning brings a whole new week of football and preparing for their next game. However, a handful of players might not want to leave Week 5 so soon. Here’s a look at who impressed and who underachieved this week.

Quarterback

Winner: Justin Herbert (27.4 FPTS)

Justin Herbert impressed for the third straight week, leading the Los Angeles Chargers to a near victory before Michael Badgley missed a game-winning field goal. Herbert completed 20 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns in the loss despite Keenan Allen missing a portion of the game with a back injury. Herbert now has nine touchdowns and 1,195 yards over four weeks heading into his bye week.

Loser: Joe Burrow (4.3)

The rookie struggled on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, completing just 19 of 30 passes for 183 yards and zero touchdowns. He threw one interception and fumbled twice (one lost) in the loss. He’ll look to bounce back in Week 6 against a dominant Indianapolis Colts defense.

Running Back

Winner: Todd Gurley (25.0 FPTS)

Gurley exploded on Sunday with 14 carries for 121 yards and four catches for 29 yards. He added one touchdown on the ground. This was easily Gurley’s best game as a member of the Atlanta Falcons, and while he could see regression when Julio Jones returns, he continues to trend up ahead of his Week 6 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Loser: Devin Singletary (4.3 FPTS)

Devin Singletary had a chance to prove himself on Tuesday with Zack Moss out and the Tennessee Titans’ coming off an extended period of time without any practice due to their COVID-19 outbreak and shutdown. Instead of excelling, he finished with just 33 yards on 12 touches and failed to find the end zone. With Moss potentially returning in Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs, we may have seen the last of Singletary’s time as the starter in Buffalo.

Wide Receiver

Winner: Brandin Cooks (30.1 FPTS)

Cooks stood out with eight catches for 161 yards and one touchdown. He received 12 targets despite taking the field for just 82 percent of snaps, which was his second-worst snap share of the season. His performance on Sunday proved that he can succeed in this offense after a disappointing start to the year. He’ll look to build on his big day in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans.

Loser: Diontae Johnson (0.8 FPTS)

Johnson caught just one pass for negative two yards on Sunday. He has yet to record a play with positive yardage since Week 2 against the Denver Broncos due to injuries and the Titans’ COVID-19 outbreak. While these don’t have an impact on his fantasy outlook, his surroundings do. Chase Claypool shone in Johnson’s absence, catching four touchdown passes. He will surely be a large part of the offense going forward, leaving Johnson in an inconsistent role that has already garnered him comparisons to Will Fuller.

Tight End

Winner: Travis Kelce (24.8 FPTS)

This week’s winner at tight end is the position’s highest scorer. Kelce caught eight passes on 12 targets for 108 yards and one touchdown. With Sammy Watkins out, Kelce will look to build on his big day in Week 6 against a Buffalo Bills secondary that looked horrendous against Jonnu Smith and the Titans’ receiving corps.

Loser: Zach Ertz (1.6 FPTS)

The Philadelphia Eagles’ receiving corps was incredibly depleted in Week 5. Still, Ertz caught just one of six targets for six yards despite appearing on the field for a season-high 95 percent of snaps. He could be in for yet another down performance against the Ravens in Week 6, leaving him limited opportunity to bounce back before Dallas Goedert returns from IR as early as Week 7.

Defense

Winner: Ravens D/ST (25.0 FPTS)

Not much needs to be said here. The Baltimore defense allowed just three points, adding seven sacks, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. They also added one touchdown and a defensive touchdown while recording nine tackles in their big win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Loser: Chiefs D/ST (-5.0 FPTS)

That was bad. The Chiefs’ defense struggled against the Las Vegas Raiders’ offense, allowing big plays to Henry Ruggs, Nelson Agholor, Devontae Booker, and Derek Carr. The unit allowed 40 points and 490 yards while picking up just one sack, one interception, and two tackles for loss.
