Two struggling teams met for a showdown at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday. The host Bengals (1-2-1) emerged with a 33-25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-3) for their first win of the season. It was also likely first of many wins in the career of number one overall pick Joe Burrow.
Joe Mixon took advantage of a revitalized offensive line this week and gashed the Jaguars for 151 yards rushing and 30 yards receiving. He found the end zone three times on the day. Burrow became the first rookie in history to hit the 300-yard mark in three straight games, with a touchdown and an interception in the contest. Tyler Boyd led the Bengals in receiving for the second straight week with seven catches for 90 yards.
Jacksonville went into halftime with a 13-10 lead, led by sharp play by quarterback Gardner Minshew. He finished the game with 351 yards passing with two touchdowns and an early interception. James Robinson was heavily involved in the half too, repeatedly displaying his elusiveness as the Jaguars moved the ball well. With a minute to go in the first half, they drove nearly the length of the field for a field goal which provided the difference in the score at halftime.
The Cincinnati onslaught came in the third quarter, when they rattled off back-to-back touchdowns by Mixon of 34 and 23 yards and followed it up with a field goal by Randy Bullock. Suddenly, it was the end of third quarter and the Bengals led 27-13. The Jaguars suffered multiple injuries, the most devastating being linebacker Myles Jack. Cincinnati took advantage of the missing playmakers to gain the advantage.
Jacksonville attempted to mount a comeback. They kicked a field goal in the third quarter after the Cincinnati run. In the fourth, the Bengals used two kicks by Bullock to bookend a Minshew touchdown to DJ Chark (8 catches, 95 yards, 2 TDs). Jacksonville would tack on a field goal late to pull within a score, but were unable to convert an onside kick, resulting in the final tally.
Burrow, who is infamous for being very particular about the footballs he uses, did not keep the game ball from his first career NFL win. When asked what he would do with the ball, he plainly said “It was a really good football, so I just threw it right back in with the other game balls so we don’t lose it.”
In Week 5, the Jaguars go on the road again. This time they will visit their winless division rival Houston Texans (0-4), who have just parted ways with head coach Bill O’Brien. The Bengals will also face a division rival when they head to Baltimore to take on the explosive Baltimore Ravens (3-1).
