The Detroit Tigers have been excellent this year. They’re so good, in fact, that making a run at the World Series seems reasonable.
If the team wants to do that, though, they could stand to put a couple of finishing touches on the roster. Here are a few players that the Tigers could potentially pursue before this year’s MLB Trade Deadline.
3B Eugenio Suárez, Arizona Diamondbacks
The Tigers have lacked a true third baseman for a little while now. The team didn’t end up acquiring a free agent solution in the offseason, and top prospect Jace Jung struggled in his major league at-bats.
Detroit general manager Scott Harris could look for a proven player to finally plug that hole, and Suárez is one of the most exciting possibilities. The former Tiger ranks top 10 in both home runs and RBI — 19 and 52, respectively — and boasts an .819 OPS. The veteran’s impressive performance points to a potentially expensive acquisition, but the fact that he’s a 33-year-old on an expiring contract could drive down the price somewhat.
This is the type of player who can anchor a batting order and provide steady offense for a young team. He’ll see a lot of demand on the market, but if Harris can get a deal done, Suárez would take an already potent Detroit offense to one that’s undoubtedly World Series-caliber.

RP Aroldis Chapman, Boston Red Sox
Aroldis Chapman turned 37 this year, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. The left-hander has recorded a 1.65 ERA in 27.1 IP while regularly topping 100 MPH on his pitches.
The need for an extra bullpen arm on this Tigers team can be debated, but there’s no doubt that Chapman would be an exciting addition. The veteran flamethrower could be just what Detroit needs to take their pitching staff to championship-level.

SP Andrew Heaney, Pittsburgh Pirates
With the recent Jackson Jobe news, the Tigers could look to add a replacement to their starting rotation. Enter: Andrew Heaney.
The Pirates’ season has been nothing short of a disaster, and it seems the obvious choice for them is to offload some veteran talent. Heaney fits the bill. The 34-year-old left-hander has a 3.24 ERA in thirteen starts this year, and he’d bring stability to a Tigers rotation that was already dealing with a Reese Olson injury prior to the Jackson Jobe news. Plus, despite his impressive performance this year, Heaney’s age and contract mean that he could potentially be acquired for a reasonable price.
Detroit could very well stand pat here — A.J. Hinch has made it known that he’s more than comfortable with bullpen games — but this move would make sense.
