Scouting Report

Ethan Holliday comes from a family of baseball talent that includes former MLB All-Star Matt Holliday (father) and former No. 1 pick Jackson Holliday (brother). He is an early candidate to be the first high school prospect selected in the 2025 draft. Holliday possesses a smooth left-handed swing, though his swing has the potential to get long at times. Working on shortening his swing will be important for Holliday as he makes a final impression on scouts before the draft. He does a great job meeting the baseball where it’s pitched and letting the pitch location dictate whether he’ll pull the ball or go the opposite way. In particular, he has shown great contact and pull skills with pitches thrown on the inside third of the plate.

Holliday had some swing-and-miss issues on the showcase circuit, which is another area for potential improvement as he makes an impression in his senior high school season. It’s important to note that while Holliday does have some swing-and-miss concerns, he is a very selective hitter who rarely chases pitches. His two weaknesses (long swing and whiff concerns) are notable, but he could boost his draft stock by correcting these issues and showing progress in the 2025 spring season.

At just 17 years old, 6-foot-4, and over 200 pounds, Holiday is still adding to his frame, which includes adding strength and power. His smooth, natural swing allows him to hit the ball hard and deliver high exit velocities, which is advanced for a prep prospect. He’s capable of developing into plus power, particularly on the pull side.

Defensively, Holliday looks smooth at shortstop, demonstrating above-average range, aggressiveness, fluidity, and arm strength. While any MLB team would surely start him at shortstop early in his minor league career, he projects best as a long-term third baseman. Not only does his arm strength play quite well at the hot corner, but his large and physical frame mirrors the build of the top third base talent.

As seen in his range at shortstop, Holliday moves around well, and he has decent speed on the basepaths. However, he’ll likely lose a step as he fills out his frame and transitions into a more power-hitting third baseman profile.

Holliday is committed to Oklahoma State University, but it’s worth noting that both his father and brother skipped opportunities at Oklahoma State and went straight from high school to the draft. Depending on his expected draft position — he’s a candidate to be selected first overall — Ethan Holliday could follow a similar path and turn pro this year.
