Why Paris Saint-Germain Will Not Win the Champions League In 2023by Alex Al-Kazzaz June 22, 2022 0 comments
Paris Saint-Germain is one of the wealthiest clubs in the world. Over the years, the club has spent a significant amount of money on players to strengthen its deeply loaded squad. The club’s big signings over the years include Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi. When Qatar Sports Investments purchased the club in 2011, the team seemed to finally have a bright future. Soon after the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović, Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, and David Beckham made their way to the French capital.

Since 2015, the club has won five Ligue 1 titles, the Coupe de France six times, and the Coupe de la Ligue five times. In addition, the club has won the Trophée des Champions six times. Furthermore, they finished as runners-up in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League. PSG’s accomplishments since 2015 are respectable. However, their inability to win the Champions League portrays them as being a rich club incapable of winning the big one.
Why should PSG not be a favorite for the next tournament?
Les Parisiens has chased the Champions League title for over half a decade now. Since the 2016-17 Champions League, the club has suffered four exits from the tournament in the Round of 16. In the 2020-21 tournament, Les Parisiens did eliminate Barcelona and Bayern Munich before being eliminated by Manchester City. PSG has a track record of disappointing finishes in the Champions League.
The team can easily defeat weaker clubs, but tends to struggle against the strong ones. Their run in the 2021-22 tournament was proof as they did not top their group after losing to Manchester City and drawing against RB Leipzig. Their elimination against Real Madrid in the Round of 16 further exposes them as a club that crumbles under pressure. Unfortunately, crumbling under pressure is a habit the club has had for a long time.
Their inability to perform well at crucial moments and habit of succumbing to heavy pressure show why Les Parisiens are not a favorite. In addition, considering the club failed to impress despite having Neymar, Messi, and Mbappé is bad for the club’s reputation. Furthermore, the arrogance and the club’s lack of a winning mentality along with poor team chemistry justifiably solidifies them as undeserving of being recognized as a favorite.
At this point, labeling PSG as a rich and powerful club incapable of winning the big one is justifiable. A club that can easily win in a league with very little to no competition but struggle in the Champions League is never a favorite.
