For the first time since 1958, Wales will be competing in the FIFA World Cup. A 1-0 win over Ukraine in the Path A final of the UEFA playoffs allows Wales to officially secure a spot in Qatar. The Welsh national team will take on England, Iran, and the United States in the tournament’s group stage.

The Dragons finished second in their qualifying group to qualify for the UEFA playoffs. Once there, Wales beat Austria 2-1 in the Path A semifinals to move on to the final, where they took on Ukraine. Wales is looking to make the most of its hard-earned opportunity to avenge the drought that lasted 64 years.

Can Wales Make a Run?

Wales certainly faces some seemingly insurmountable odds in Qatar. Interestingly enough, their first match is against the United States. The winner of this match is likely to finish second in the group, considering England is the overwhelming favorite. The national team may not have to worry too much about Iran, but they can’t them lightly. However, the Dragons must certainly view the USA as a respectable opponent.

Wales is in a similar situation as the United States. Since the Welsh national team plays England in their final group stage match, they must go into that game with two wins, minimum. In addition, with two wins, the national team would already have a spot in the Round of 16. Therefore, the Dragons may have nothing to worry about by the time they face England. However, even if by then they have a spot in the knockout stage, there’s no reason for them to not give England a run for their money.

For Wales to have a chance of making a deep run, they need to start off with positive and convincing wins. Back in 1958, the Dragons did make it to the quarterfinals, and they would love to make it at least that far again.
