Matt Strahm is Shattering Expectations

Matt Strahm is Shattering Expectations

by May 22, 2022 0 comments

So far this season, the Red Sox relievers have had their fair share of struggles. Through the first two months of the 2022 campaign, they have blown the most saves in baseball with nine. While they have cost the Red Sox a few games, Matt Strahm has emerged as a critical piece. The former 643rd overall pick signed a one-year deal with Boston in the offseason and is surpassing expectations.

Through 17 games, Strahm has posted a 1.88 ERA. The West Fargo native has also recorded two wins, and his first big league save. Regardless of the role, he is proving to be an arm the Red Sox can rely on. During his Red Sox tenure so far, Strahm has been nearly unhittable every time he steps on the mound.

Additionally, opponents are only batting .143 against the former Padre. He has not allowed a home run and only walked three batters. In high leverage situations, he hasn’t been afraid to show his emotions and is quickly becoming a fan favorite. After being limited to 25 appearances from 2020-to 2021 due to injuries, Strahm is making up for the lost time. As the Red Sox look to rebound from a rough start, he will be relied on heavily.

In 14.1 innings of work this season, Strahm has struck out 15 batters. With May nearly in the books, only one batter has recorded a hit against him. He also has three appearances with multiple strikeouts this month, including a season-high three on May 16th against Houston. As the Red Sox have won three straight series, Strahm is taking his game to another level.

Strahm has earned a prominent role

While the season is far from over, the Red Sox appear to have found a gem in the thirty-year-old reliever. He has the lowest ERA of any Red Sox reliever and is tied for the second-most appearances on the team. Strahm is getting better as the season goes on and the temperatures climb. Although the Red Sox right-hander has flown under the radar outside of Boston, that will change if he can continue his recent success. He has been a pleasant surprise for the Red Sox, with plenty of time left to shock the rest of the baseball world.
