Best Bet for Outright Winner

Jack: Brad Keselowski (+1400)

It has been since 2015 that a driver starting top five in the Daytona 500 went on to win. Feels like it’s due time for a market correction here. Keselowski, after a less than stellar Clash outing, has been terrific in the leadup to the 500. He finished top 10 in all three practice sessions and won his Duel Race. Keselowski also has the most plate track wins of any active Cup Series driver with seven. Only one of those is Daytona and that was the 2016 July race. Seeing as he is overdue for a 500 win, look for Keselowski to begin his run with Jack Roush with a bang.

Dale: Joey Logano (+1200)

Once the race gets close to the finish, Logano rarely fails to get his car to the front. Now that Keselowski has joined RFK Racing, Logano has become the senior statesman of Penske, so I’ll be watching carefully to see how his partnership with Austin Cindric pans out. While he will have a backup car, do not expect it to have much of an impact on his performance. The Fords have been impeccably fast throughout the week. Despite a poor performance in the first practice, he looked significantly better in the second session.

Drivers to Avoid for Outright Winner Bets

Jack: Chase Elliott (+1100)

The 2020 Cup Series Champion has improved his plate racing finishes as of late. However, Elliott is prone to either getting caught up or starting incidents in these races. In his career, his average finish at both plate tracks combined is 18.5, and it shoots up to 21.08 at Daytona. If the number was a bit higher, Eliott wouldn’t be a bad play, but considering his career plate track numbers, you are better off elsewhere.

Dale: Martin Truex Jr. (+2000)

Truex never really adapted to Daytona during his Cup career. In 17 races, he has only finished inside the top 10 three times. Similar to the rest of the Gibbs Toyota’s, he did not show tremendous speed throughout the week. After a good performance in the first practice session, Truex dropped to 24th fastest on the turnaround attempt. You can find more compelling options on the board if you’re looking to place a wager on an outright winner. I would look elsewhere for Sunday.
