BU Secures First Beanpot Title Since 2015

On Monday night, the Boston University Terriers and Northeastern Huskies squared off to determine who would be the 2021 Beanpot champions. The two teams entered the game with 37 championships combined. Northeastern won it all in 2020, while BU’s last title came in 2015. In a hard-fought matchup, the two schools did not disappoint.

In the first period, both goalies were tested early on. The Huskies and Terriers combined for 15 shots on net but ended the period tied at zero. TJ Semptimphelter continued to thrive for NU as he turned away all shots he faced. Although the Huskies spent a lot of time in the offensive zone, the Terriers were able to limit their scoring chances. That set the stage for an action-filled second frame

While the Beanpot remained scoreless in the second period, both teams dished out big hits. The Terriers continued to dominate in the face-off circle and found their groove offensively. Both teams continued to stay out of the penalty box as BU continued to challenge the Huskies freshman goalie with seven shots on net. However, in the third period, the offense finally showed up.

With less than five minutes left in the game, Dylan Peterson sent BU fans into a frenzy. On a two-on-one, Peterson found the back of the net, and the Terriers never looked back. For the Huskies, it was a heartbreaking finish, but for BU, a victory long in the making. The Terriers ended their seven-year title drought in a packed TD Garden and now have 12 wins in their last 14 games.

What a Beanpot Championship Means for BU

After winning four straight titles as a player, Albie O’Connell secured his first title as a coach. As the Terriers secured their 31st Beanpot title, they also provided a reminder of how special this unique tournament is to Boston.

“For the players, it’s great excitement—the opportunity to play in the game, and to play the way they did,” O’Connell said. “They really performed. I thought the guys did a really good job of playing a championship-type game.”

With the Beanpot trophy returning to BU, the Terriers will shift their focus to the Hockey East tournament, which starts on March 9. While that is still a month away, it has been an unforgettable February for the BU faithful.
