2022 Senior Bowl: Carson Strong Defies All Odds on his Way to the NFL

by February 2, 2022 0 comments

Coming into the season under the radar, Nevada senior quarterback Carson Strong has flipped the script. The Vacaville, California native, threw for 4,186 yards on his way to 36 touchdowns. He finished tied for seventh on total touchdowns throughout the season. He continued his incredible year on Tuesday’s first day of Senior Bowl practice. He’s confident and has a skillset like no other.

“Everyone out here is very talented,” Strong said after practice. “What I bring to the table is, I’m a good decision maker with a strong arm. I’m very confident in my arm. You know, I can make all the throws.”

Overcoming Injury

While Strong had a breakout season, it almost didn’t happen due to a devastating injury. Last February, he had surgery that was supposed to sideline him for a year. For Strong, however, he played the first game of the season six months later.

“My leg was getting swollen as the season went on, but there was no way I was going to miss the season,” Strong said. “I played the last game of the season without a knee brace and even know I feel comfortable without it on.”

While dealing with a swollen leg affected the first half of the season, Strong said the pain eventually went away. For now, Strong said he’s continuing to get his feet underneath him and getting better every day.

Impressing on Day One

Strong stood out among his national teammates, Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder. He hits the deep ball like no other, always putting his receiver in a place only they can get the ball. Besides the deep ball, he was hitting slants and all routes with effortless precision. Along with the deep ball, he’s mastered the pass on the run, as he still hits his receivers very accurately. He explains how it’s enjoyable playing with a new group of guys with unique playing styles.

“It was a bit of a challenge getting acquainted with everyone, but that’s a part of the process,” Strong said. Everyone in attendance praised Strong for his performances and claimed him as one of the best quarterbacks of the day. For Strong, however, he said he wants to be even better next time out. “Next time, I’ll know the playbook a little better, have a better feel for my receivers. I’m ready to show everyone what I’m about.”

Another snaky part of his game is mobility. While the quarterback is more of a reliable pocket passer, he can create space when needed on the ground. Strong will continue practicing this week before participating in the 2022 Senior Bowl on Saturday afternoon. The kickoff is set for 1:30 CT.
