Bobby Dalbec Has Been an Impact Bat in August

For the majority of the 2021 season, Bobby Dalbec has struggled. In 96 games, the former top prospect is hitting .233 with 12 home runs. However, he has shown signs of breaking out over the last two weeks at the perfect time. As the calendar has flipped to August, Dalbec is hitting over .400 and has been an RBI machine. As Boston looks to secure a playoff spot, they will need Dalbec’s bat.

Through 12 games in August, Dalbec is hitting .407. The Seattle native also has six extra-base hits, all of which have come in his last three games. In that span, Dalbec has 11 RBIs, which is more than he had in July. With the Red Sox in need of a spark, their first baseman has stepped up. His recent streak has brought a new dynamic to a Red Sox offense that has outscored Baltimore 24-3 in their past two games.

Additionally, Dalbec has shown better plate discipline this month. Entering play on Sunday, Dalbec had only struck out eight times in August. He had also gone four straight games without striking out and waked twice in that span. In 2021, strikeouts have been Dalbec’s Achilles’ heel following an impressive 2020 campaign. During Dalbec’s hot streak, his average has increased from .216 to .233.

Opportunity Knocks

Expectations were high for the Arizona product entering this season. In 2020, he hit eight home runs in 23 games and was a potent bat in the Red Sox lineup. Over the past two weeks, he has made a similar impact and started to meet expectations. Although the Red Sox missed out on Anthony Rizzo at the trade deadline, they are in good hands with Dalbec at first. While the playoff race is getting tighter, the 26-year-old is rising to the occasion.

As Boston looks to reclaim the top spot in the AL East, Dalbec will be an important piece. He has rare power and has rewarded the Red Sox’s faith with his recent play. If the former fourth-round pick can continue to cut down on strikeouts, then August will be a special month. Although the Red Sox have Triston Casas in the minors, Bobby Dalbec is showing why he belongs in Boston.
