Report: Cubs Trade Lefty Andrew Chafin To Oakland

by July 27, 2021 0 comments

As the evening stars set in, the Chicago Cubs appear to have begun the fire sale of their underperforming ballclub. The start of which being a big piece of their bullpen in Andrew Chafin. The crafty left-hander has compiled a 2.06 ERA in 43 appearances totaling 39.1 innings in Chicago. During that span, he has struck out 37 batters while walking twelve.  The 31-year-old Chafin was signed to a one-year deal by the Cubs with a mutual option for 2022, which includes a $500K buyout. The Athletics will take on the remaining $822,596 of his salary for 2021.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand had the news first.

The return to Chicago appears to be a decent prospect. Triple-A outfielder Greg Deichmann has been hitting .300/.432/.449 in Las Vegas with a .881 OPS. According to MLB Pipeline, Deichmann is Oakland’s No. 9 prospect. His calling card is his power, which has not yet been shown often. He has demonstrated some speed on the basepaths, with seven stolen bases in his 59 games played. The Oakland outfielder is on their 40-man roster, meaning that the Cubs will not gain or lose a spot in this transaction.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first on the return for Chicago.

The other player in return is still unknown at this time.
