New York Rangers Hire Gerard Gallant as New Head Coach

by June 15, 2021 0 comments

Gerard Gallant is now the new head coach of the New York Rangers, as reported by Post’s Larry Brooks. Pierre LeBrun with TSN and The Athletic mentioned a source also confirmed the hiring by the Rangers. It’s believed to be a four-year deal. The hiring is the first major move Chris Drury has made since being named the President and General Manager on May 5.

Gallant’s most recent achievement was coaching Team Canada to gold at the 2021 IIHF World Championship. His last NHL coaching position was with the Las Vegas Knights as the head coach. He led the Knights to a Stanley Cup appearance in the franchise’s first season in the NHL. He also won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year for the 2017-18 season with the Knights. Gallant’s career record is 270-216-4-51 as head coach for the Knights, Florida Panthers, and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Now the search will be on for assistant coaches. With that will also come a re-tooling of the team into what they believe will give them a chance to win. He has stars such as Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad, and the future is looking bright with players like Alexis Lafreniere and Igor Shesterkin. It will be interesting to see how this hiring will affect future decisions for the front office with the draft and free agency.
