Weekly Wagers: MLB, NBA, NHL Bets 6/7

by June 7, 2021 0 comments

There is not a lot to choose from in terms of sheer number of games for tonight’s Monday edition of Weekly Wagers. That said, there are a handful of MLB contests on the docket and a pair of playoff games in both the NHL and NBA. There are still opportunities for fattening the bankroll after going 3-0 on bets last Thursday. Time to keep that momentum going and see where our nose for winners takes us.

MLB: Chicago Cubs at San Diego Padres (F5 o4.5), 10:10 p.m. EDT (ESPN)

The Cubs will trot out Adbert Alzolay (4-4, 3.62 ERA) against the Padres’ Ryan Weathers (2-2, 2.06) in San Diego late tonight, and the total for the first five innings is set at 4.5. Alzolay has pitched well in his last few starts but on the season has allowed two or more runs in eight of his ten starts, including three or more in three of those. Weathers, on the other hand, started off well. He eventually worked his way into the rotation before coughing up four runs a piece in his last two starts, completing just five innings in each. One of those was against this same Chicago team a week ago.

The Cubs are hot right now, and seeing a young pitcher for the second time in six days does not bode well for the first five innings line. Assuming the Cubs put four on the board against Weathers, bettors will need San Diego to find the plate just once to hit. To be honest, Chicago might exceed the total on their own.

Book it: o4.5 total runs, first five innings

NBA: Denver Nuggets (+5, -110) at Phoenix Suns, 10 p.m. EDT (TNT)

While you’re watching the Cubs put up runs to cover the first five, bang that “last channel” button and check in on the first game of Nuggets/Suns. I fully expect the Suns to jump out to an early lead in this one (in fact, the Phoenix -1.5 first quarter bet at home looks tempting), but the Nuggets are unlikely to stay down.

A Denver team with the easy MVP favorite in Nikola Jokic getting five points after just having dispatched Portland is a bet not to be passed on. Questions still linger about Chris Paul’s shoulder injury for the Suns. After a few days off, he very well could come out hitting shots (see that 1Q line, again) but an MVP-like performance should not be expected. The smart money is on a great team getting a free five points. Even at 4.5, this is a worthy bet.

Book it: Denver +5, -110

*Parlay Alert*

NHL: Montreal Canadiens (-155/u5.5) vs. Winnipeg Jets, 8 p.m. EDT

Break out the brooms, because this one is over. We’ll, under. Anyway, the series is done. The Canadiens are going to take it, so the question is by how much? It’s a reasonable question, especially in light of the 5-1 shellacking Winnipeg took on Sunday. Mark Scheifele will still be out for the Jets, and Carey Price appears to be in the zone between the pipes for Montreal.

Winnipeg should put up a bit more of a fight, but it’s the Canadiens coasting to victory in this one, with quite a bit of keep away down the stretch. Both of these bets are strong apart, and even better parlayed together. Movement on the money line can be disregarded, a win is a win. A drop in the total to 5 goals makes no difference either, as it will result in a push at worst.

Book it: Parlay Montreal ML (-155) with u5.5 total goals

Good luck to everyone tonight on a small slate. For the next set of wagers, we will have a full complement of sports to choose from and a few extra picks. Get out there and make some money.
