Heller Answers His 3 Burning Questions: Miami Dolphinsby Joe Heller March 10, 2021 0 comments
Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those questions for the Miami Dolphins.
If you want to look back at the previous article you can do that here.
When will it be Tua time in South Beach?
The most coveted signal-caller in last year’s draft, not named Joe Burrow, was Tua Tagovailoa. When the team drafted him sixth overall, the watch began for the beginning of Tua-time almost immediately. The former Alabama quarterback took his first NFL snaps in relief of Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 6, in which the Dolphins had the game in hand.
Tagovailoa’s first start came two weeks later, in Week 8, after their bye.
While Fitzpatrick was playing well, head coach Brian Flores decided it was time. Tua went 6-3 as a starter. He threw for just over 1,800 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also added three scores on the ground.
His season didn’t go without a few hiccups, where he was benched in a couple of games, but for the most part, his ability to improvise was just as advertised.
Will they finally have a consistent running game?
One of the weaknesses for this team over the last couple of seasons was the lack of a running game. The Dolphins brought in former San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida to help. Breida couldn’t get going only accounting for 254 rushing yards in 12 games. The team’s leading running back this season was second-year back Myles Gaskin. In 10 games, Gaskin led the team with 584 yards and three touchdowns.
How will the revamped defense look?
The defense kept this team in games. The stud defensively was Xavien Howard, who led the team and the NFL in both interceptions with 10 and pass deflections in which he recorded 20. He earned his second Pro Bowl selection.
