The NCAA Basketball Daily Dunk: Wednesday, December 23, 2020

West Virginia and Kansas were in action yesterday so we’ll catch you up on that, and there are five more ranked teams playing later tonight, including Villanova and Rutgers.

Welcome to today’s Daily Dunk where we recap all of college basketball’s biggest games from yesterday and give you a look at the matchups to watch later today!

You can view the updated AP Top 25 rankings here.

Yesterday’s Biggest Games

Nebraska 53 vs. #9 Wisconsin 67

The ninth-ranked Badgers picked up their seventh win of the season last night in their 14-point win. Brad Davison led his team in scoring with 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds with three assists.

This is Wisconsin’s fourth straight victory since their upset loss to Marquette so they’re steadily making their way back up the rankings. Greg Gard’s team will have to really earn their next win against #12 Michigan State on Christmas Day–a team who was #4 a week ago.

#7 West Virginia 65 vs. #3 Kansas 79

The Jayhawks put on one heck of a performance at home against #7 West Virginia. With 3:30 left in the second half, Kansas led by 20 points. Dick Vitale said on the broadcast he couldn’t believe that it was a 20-point game at that point and one would have to agree with him. This was a game between two of the top seven teams in the country so it was expected that this game would at least be competitive late, but it was the opposite.

West Virginia’s biggest name player, Derek Culver, only scored eight points with one assist which was a resemblance of the Mountaineers’ lack of consistent scoring. It was a different story for Kansas, as they had all five starters score double-digit points. Christian Braun and Marcus Garrett were great once again, combining for 37 points in the surprising blowout win.

This will be a big win on Kansas’ resume, considering West Virginia was coming off of wins over Richmond and Iowa State.

St. Mary’s 49 vs. San Diego State 74

SDSU needed a blowout win last night after falling flat in their loss at home against BYU that knocked them all the way out of the Top 25. Unlike that game, the Aztecs’ offense was able to come out and give themselves a big cushion in this one. They put up double the amount of points that St. Mary’s did in the first half, and over 30 points in the final 20 minutes.

While Matt Mitchell was a one-man show in their BYU loss, Brian Dutcher got more of his team involved yesterday. Four players got into double figures including Nathan Mensah, who was 8-9 from the field and scored 18 points while grabbing 13 rebounds.

Games to Watch Today

#22 Xavier vs. #13 Creighton

How to Watch: Wednesday, December 23, 3:00 PM ET, FS1

Xavier has started the season undefeated and will face their toughest test yet in the Bluejays.

#11 Rutgers vs. #23 Ohio State

How to Watch: Wednesday, December 23, 4:30 PM ET, BTN

Rutgers has risen eight spots from where they were in the previous rankings, and they will immediately be tested after upsetting Illinois last weekend.

#5 Villanova vs. Marquette

How to Watch: Wednesday, December 23, 7:00 PM ET, FS1

Villanova has gotten back into the top-five after they were upset earlier in the season. Now they face Marquette who has upset two top-10 opponents this season, so it could be a trap game of sorts today for the Wildcats.
