Week 7 Recap: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday for a battle of the AFC’s two remaining undefeated teams.

Pittsburgh impressed early on with three touchdowns and a field goal in the first half. The Steelers led at halftime, 24-7, but the Titans made it interesting in the second half. The Tennessee defense forced a turnover and two punts in the third quarter, allowing just three points along the way, while their offense added a touchdown and a field goal. They added seven more points early in the fourth quarter, putting them behind by just three points.

Trailing 27-24, the Titans took the ball with 2:35 left in the game and drove 52 yards. Ryan Tannehill and the offense set up Stephen Gostkowski for a 45-yard field goal. The veteran missed, giving the Steelers a crucial 27-24 victory on the road.


James Conner finished with 23 touches for 111 scrimmage yards. Fellow running back toted the football just twice, gaining two yards, but he was able to find the end zone. Roethlisberger completed 32 of 49 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns in the win, though he did toss three interceptions. Diontae Johnson came back from injury and hauled in nine of 15 targets for 80 yards and two touchdowns. JuJu Smith-Schuster caught nine of 14 targets for 85 yards while Eric Ebron had six catches for 50 yards. Explosive rookie Chase Claypool quieted down, catching one pass for a loss of two yards.

Linebacker Vince Williams recorded 10 tackles, including one sack of Ryan Tannehill. T.J. Watt also recorded a sack.

For the Titans, Tannehill completed 18 of 30 passes for 220 yards and two scores. Derrick Henry carried the ball 20 times for 75 yards and a touchdown. A.J. Brown exploded for 153 yards and one touchdown. Corey Davis also find the end zone, catching six passes for 35 yards. Tight end Jonnu Smith and Anthony Firkser, who have looked explosive at times this year, were held to just three catches for 16 yards combined.

Malcolm Butler and Jayon Brown tied for the team lead with eight tackles apiece. Titans defenders were unable to sack Roethlisberger in the contest, though they did pick him off thrice. Brown, Amani Hooker, and Dane Cruikshank each finished with one sack apiece.


What’s Next?

The Steelers improve to 6-0 while the Titans drop to 5-1. Pittsburgh will look for their success to continue as they take on the Ravens in Baltimore next week. Tennessee travels to Cincinnati for a matchup with rookie Joe Burrow and the 1-5-1 Bengals.
