Gregg Popovich won’t be the coach of the Brooklyn Netsby Alex Jordan August 25, 2020 0 comments
The Brooklyn Nets are looking for a new coach after Kenny Atkinson parted ways with the team earlier in the season. The Nets are interested in San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and will peruse that possibility, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Popovich signed a three-year extension with the Spurs last year. The Nets would need permission to talk to Popovich. Nets interim head coach Jacque Vaughn, Jason Kidd, Ty Lue, Ime Udoka, and Jeff Van Gundy are the other candidates for the job.
The next coach of the Nets isn’t going to be Popovich. There has been no indication that Popovich wants to leave the Spurs. He has been the NBA Coach of the Year three times, is third all-time in wins and has won five championships with the Spurs. So why would he leave the Spurs?
So who will be the Nets next coach? It should be interim coach Jacque Vaughn. The Nets made the playoffs this season but their season ended on Sunday. Vaughn is confident that he’s the right person for the job.
What I am confident in is my skill set as a coach, my ability to communicate and have relationship with guys, my ability to adjust on the fly, adjust with individuals,” Vaughn told Brian Lewis of the New York Post . “Those things I’m very comfortable with, comfortable at this stage of my career of having a voice and choice with my players.”
He added, “Very comfortable at this stage of my career of having truth and transparency with management. Very comfortable in my career of having a care and competence level with my performance staff. So those things hopefully were showcased. But at the end of the day, I’m very comfortable with all those aspects.”
While Vaughn is the person that Nets general manager Sean Marks wants, some players want someone else. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving want a high profile coach, like Popovich, according to Jackie MacMullan of ESPN. There’s no way that Popovich will be the coach of the Nets. Vaughn should have the job permanently.
