Report: Baltimore Ravens to Cut or Trade Earl Thomas

Report: Baltimore Ravens to Cut or Trade Earl Thomas

by August 23, 2020 0 comments

Training camp always brings shocking news and this year, the Baltimore Ravens are witnessing that first-hand.

Baltimore is expected to move on from Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas by the end of the day on Sunday, according to Adam Schefter of

Thomas’s status with the Ravens was put in jeopardy on Friday when he got into a physical fight and threw punches at teammate Chuck Clark. He was sent home from practice on Friday and asked not to return on Saturday and Sunday.

A seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro, Thomas spent the first nine years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks, helping form an elite secondary that made several trips to the Super Bowl. In 10 seasons, Thomass has intercepted 30 passes and defended 71. He also has an impressive tackle count of 713, with 497 solo and 216 assisted. He forced 12 fumbles, recovered six, and amassed two sacks.

Thomas signed a four-year, $55 million contract with the Ravens ahead of the 2019 season. The deal, which is heavily front-loaded, paid him in $22 million last year and just an average of $11 million over each of the next three seasons. However, the Ravens will escape the remaining $33 million left on his contract by trading him or suspending him for detrimental conduct and immediately cutting him.

It seems likely that Thomas will receive a lot of interest in the trade market, especially now that the $22 million first year of his deal is in the past. After all, $11 million per year for an elite safety is a good bargain even if it means putting up with a minor off-the-field issue every now and then.

One team interested in the star safety is the Dallas Cowboys, who pursued Thomas when he was with the Seahawks back in 2018.

It’s unclear as of now what will happen to Thomas, but we should have an answer within the next 12 hours.
