Could Dak Prescott Leave the Dallas Cowboys?

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys failed to reach a long-term deal before Wednesday’s deadline.

Since a deal wasn’t reached, Prescott will play the 2020 season on the $31.4 million franchise tag he signed last month. He will be one of 12 players playing on the franchise tag in 2020 after he rejected the Cowboys’ offer for $33 million to $35 million annually with $110 million guaranteed, $70 million owed in the first two years, and a $50 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater.

Prescott wants a four-year deal while the team wants a five-year deal.

So what happens now? The two sides can’t continue the contract negotiations until after the 2020 season. If a deal isn’t reached when talks resume, the Cowboys could hit Prescott with the franchise tag again next year. Prescott would make about $37.7 million if that happened.

It’s quite possible that Prescott might not be with the Cowboys after the 2020 season. He will have to have the best or one of the best seasons of his career if he wants the team to make an offer that he feels is fair, too. If he struggles, he will likely become a free agent in 2021.

The Cowboys are 40-24 with Prescott as their quarterback. Last year, he threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns, both career-highs. He had an 8-8 record.
