New York governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday that he wants sports back in New York. If sports were to return, however, it would be without fans.

“I also have been encouraging major sports teams to plan reopenings without fans,” Cuomo said during his daily coronavirus briefing. “But the games could be televised. New York State will help those major sports franchises to do just that. Hockey, basketball, baseball, football — whoever can reopen — we’re a ready, willing, and able partner.”

Cuomo added, “If they can make the numbers work, I say great. Come back. … Why wait until you can fill a stadium before you start to bring a team back? If you can televise it in the meantime, great.”

He also said that he wants to watch the Buffalo Bills.

Cuomo has stated that racing can return to the state at horse tracks and at Watkins Glen International. New York would be the third state to open up to sports, joining Arizona and Florida.

NASCAR made its return on Sunday with its first race since March 8. MLB is trying to start its season in July while the NBA is figuring out if it should resume its season. Whenever the other major sports return, New York could be a place where games are held.
