The Texans finished a three-year, $66 million contract extension with left tackle Laremy Tunsil on Friday. Now, the team’s top priority is getting a deal with Watson done.
Watson is one of three quarterbacks who could set NFL records. The other quarterbacks who could set records are Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott. To set a new record for a new deal, Mahomes or Watson would have to top Russell Wilson’s four-year, $140 million deal. Jared Goff has the record for guaranteed money at $110 million.
”We want him to be a Houston Texan for his career,” Texans head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien said in January. “He is a great person, he’s a great football player and he means a lot to this organization, to this city, to this league. I just don’t want to get into the nuts and bolts of when you would do that and all those different things. Those things take time, but we want him here for a long time.”
Last year, Watson threw for 3,852 yards and 26 touchdowns and had 12 interceptions.
In three seasons he has thrown for 9,716 yards and 71 touchdowns, had 29 interceptions, and ran for 14 touchdowns.
Watson deserves an extension because the Texans have made the playoffs every year with him at quarterback. It’s time for Watson to get paid.
