Dallas Cowboys Should Get Dak Prescott Deal Done

Dak Prescott will become an unrestricted free agent in March, and the Dallas Cowboys should look to get a deal with Prescott done as soon as possible.

The Cowboys have been trying to get a deal done with Prescott since last summer. They came close to a deal that would pay Prescott about $33 million annually back in September, but talks broke down after Prescott asked for more money, according to Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Prescott wants to be paid as much or more as Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who is the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback at $35 million annually. The Cowboys are making getting a deal with Prescott their top priority.

“We want to get this done,” Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said. “Things are fixing to heat up. We want to put every foot forward and try to grind this out and get a deal done.”

Jones added, “I know he wants to get his contract in the rearview mirror and we want it too. We want him to be treated well, financially and respectfully. We are going to have a real urgency to get this done.”

One thing that the Cowboys could do is put the franchise tag on Prescott. They would have until March 10 to do so. However, Prescott has said that he doesn’t want the franchise tag and wouldn’t be happy if that happened. The Cowboys don’t want to place the franchise tag on Prescott.

“Our goal is to avoid it,” Jones said told Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News on Friday of the tag. “We want to get a deal done. We’re going to roll up our sleeves and when these things get momentum, they get done, but both sides got to be in a place where we think we’re within shouting distance of getting something done.”

Should Prescott become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL like he wants to? This past season he threw for 4,902 yards with 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He was 10th in passer rating (99.7) and fourth in ESPN’s Total QBR (70.2). While those aren’t bad numbers the Cowboys were 8-8 and didn’t make the playoffs.

Prescott shouldn’t become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL right now. He hasn’t played as well as he did in his rookie year the past three seasons. He has led the Cowboys to the playoffs only once, winning just one playoff game. That kind of performance doesn’t qualify you to be the highest-paid quarterback in the league. If Prescott wants to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, then he needs to pick up his performance a little bit and take the Cowboys to the playoffs every year. Winning a Super Bowl wouldn’t hurt also.

The Cowboys should get a deal with Prescott done because he’s too good of a quarterback to have a franchise tag placed on him. The Cowboys should keep Prescott, however, they shouldn’t make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL just yet.
